Fantail in my garden this afternoon
SH1 Terrace Tunnel official opening
The Terrace Tunnel was officially opened on Sunday evening following a major upgrade. 8 new 90kW jet fans were installed in the roof and 1100 new high pressure sodium lights were fitted. In addition, a deluge system designed to suppress a fire in the tunnel was installed. It is capable of delivering Wellington’s annual rainfall in just over 3 minutes. A public walk through followed the opening which 5000 people turned out for. Not bad for a Sunday night.
David Shearer Press Conference
Yesterday I photographed Labour’s David Shearer making his first big address as leader at The Wellesley Hotel for Setford News Photo Agency. He gave a press conference afterwards where I took this photo. While there were plenty of video and stills cameras there, this is now a common way for journalists to take pictures.
Backlit passion vine hoppers
I went into my garden today with my Leica D-Lux 4 looking to get a macro image of a cicada. This is what I shot instead.
IHC youth visit Zeal
Highlight from last week was photographing 8 IHC young people visiting ZEAL at their purpose-built youth facility on Ghuznee Street in Wellington

Ed & Kristen 11.11.11
I had the privilage of photographing Ed and Kristen’s wedding at Ngawi on 11.11.11 As much as I could, I used a documentary style. Despite the pressure and responsibility, I really enjoy wedding photography as they are special occasions and the resulting photos bring so much joy to the people involved.
Te Araroa – The Long Pathway opens
Te Araroa – The Long Pathway was officially opened on Saturday at Shorland Park, Island Bay by Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae. 17 years in the making, Te Araroa is a 3000-km trail stretching from Cape Reinga in the North of New Zealand to Bluff in the South. The trail goes down the coastline, through the forest, across farmland, over volcanoes and mountain passes, along river valleys, and on green pathways through seven cities.
Worlds biggest boat trailer?
I had the privilege of photograhing Ed and Kristen’s wedding yesterday. It was held at Ngawi on the South Wairarapa Coast, a fishing village with bulldozers and boat trailers lined up on the beach. We spotted this one during our location shoot which must be a contender for biggest boat trailer in the world.
36 head-shots in 31 minutes
One of the more challenging assignment requests I’ve had recently was to photograph 36 people at a hui at Tapu Te Ranga Marae for individual head and shoulders portraits. Nothing unusual about that until told they would have a 40 minute window for the photograpy. Normally I would allow 5- 10 minutes per person but decided to take on the assignment and make it work. Shooting time was 31 minutes. Thanks to Ahenata and the folk at NZQA for being so organised on the day.
